Dr. Benchimol received a Bachelor's of Science in genetics from York University, his MD degree from the University of Western Ontario and his pediatric residency at the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO). From 2005-2009, he completed clinical and research fellowships in pediatric gastroenterology and inflammatory bowel diseases at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto. At the same time, he completed a PhD in clinical epidemiology at the University of Toronto and was supported by a CCHCSP Doctoral Award. His thesis project used Ontario's health administrative data at the Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences (ICES) to create the largest cohort of pediatric inflammatory bowel disease patients in the world. Dr. Benchimol is currently a clinician scientist in the Division of Gastroenterology at CHEO, an adjunct scientist at ICES@uOttawa, and assistant professor at the University of Ottawa in the departments of Pediatrics and Epidemiology. He studies the epidemiology and outcomes of patients with IBD and examines health systems issues for patients with chronic diseases using health administrative data. He also has an interest in the methods used to conduct and report research using health administrative data.
