BIOGRAPHY
Dr. Mario Cappelli is a Clinical Psychologist who for the past 25 years has specialized in working with children, youth, young adults and their families. He is the Director of Psychiatry & Mental Health Research at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO), a Clinical & Adjunct Professor of Psychology and Psychiatry, and a Member of the Faculty of Graduate and Post-Doctoral Studies at the University of Ottawa. Considered an expert in his field, Dr. Cappelli is a sought after clinician, trusted advisor, educator and leader within the mental health community. He is known for his expertise but also his care and commitment to providing both effective mental health services and to improve access to these services for all young people. Dr. Cappelli has extensive clinical experience with a wide range of child and youth problems as well as the unique challenges faced by older teens and those emerging and transitioning into adulthood. In addition to his clinical activities Dr. Cappelli has a passion for teaching and research, and has trained numerous new PhD psychologists and health clinical scientists. His current research focus is on how we provide care to children and youth in crisis, and is one of the lead developers of HEADS-ED: a protocol followed by emergency departments across Canada on how to properly assess youth in crisis. Dr. Cappelli is also a national advocate for mental health service for older youth and young adults. His research has been funded by both government and private foundations including, the RBC Foundation, CHEO Foundation, Public Health Canada, Mental Health Commission of Canada, CIHR, Ontario Centre of Excellence for Child and Youth Mental Health.
