Biography

Crystal is a PhD Candidate (Human Nutrition) and CIHR Vanier Scholar at the University of British Columbia. She is a Registered Dietitian and has worked as a Pediatric Clinical Dietitian at BC Children’s Hospital and internationally for the United Nations World Food Programme and UNICEF in over six countries (Rwanda, Malawi, Ethiopia, Timor-Leste, Italy, USA). Through her PhD research funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, Crystal Karakochuk is leading a randomized trial among women in rural Cambodia to investigate the causes of anemia and to build the evidence for more effective nutrition policy and programs. Her overall research focus is on maternal and child nutrition, with an emphasis on nutrition interventions and the use and interpretation of nutrition biomarkers.
