Biography

Dr. Kellie Thiessen has an extensive clinical background in maternal/child health, she is a registered midwife and a registered nurse, and holds a tenure-track position as an Assistant Professor at the College of Nursing, University of Manitoba. She is also a Research Scientist at the Children’s Hospital Research Institute of Manitoba (CHRIM) and the Director of the Manitoba Midwifery Education Program, which is a partnership between the University of Manitoba and McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario. She has worked as a midwife in the United States, Brazilian, and Canadian health care systems and is committed to developing innovative collaborative models of midwifery practice that will increase choices for women and their families, as well as provide comprehensive care. Dr. Thiessen has built a strong research team that includes experts across all health care disciplines and extends to key areas of her research focus which is health policy, including health human resource planning and health economics and its impact on access to maternal child health services. The objective of her overall research program is to design interventions that will inform strategies and policies to improve delivery of maternity care health services. These outcomes will demonstrate how to best utilize midwives to improve both perinatal and system level outcomes in the Canadian context. Dr. Thiessen is currently funded by Research Manitoba and is the lead investigator on a comprehensive cost-analysis study that is investigating costs and outcomes associated with three different maternity care provider types in Manitoba.
